To alter one thing in a finished AI video, use a localized video edit—usually called video inpainting—rather than firing off a new text-to-video prompt. Keep the approved shot protected. Constrain the change to the smallest workable region and time range, then synthesize only the product, prop, background detail, or unwanted object that needs changing.

That distinction keeps good footage alive. Full regeneration makes the model rebuild camera movement, composition, lighting, subject action, and every stray detail from zero; a localized edit starts from the approved clip and confines the change. “Without regenerating” does not mean zero frames get rendered. The altered area still has to be synthesized across the clip. It means the approved video remains the source instead of a blank canvas, so the creative team revises a shot rather than reopening the whole concept.

When should you choose a localized edit over a new generation?

Choose a localized edit when the shot is approved apart from one clearly defined element. The wrong SKU color, an unwanted stand, a missing prop, a distracting background object, or a product swap all qualify because the camera, action, framing, and scene intent already work.

Make one principal change per pass. A new bottle, different backdrop, altered lighting, and revised hand position in one request forces the model to reinterpret a wider area, making the original motion harder to keep. Runway’s timeline can limit an edit to part of a video, so a late-shot correction leaves the opening frames alone.

Call for a broader rebuild when the requested change fills most of the frame, moves through difficult occlusions, or needs frame-exact animation. That does not mean abandoning AI video generation. It means writing a fresh, controlled brief for the changed sequence instead of asking a small repair to carry a wholesale redesign.

    Removal tells the system to rebuild what belongs behind an unwanted element. Replacement asks it to retain an object’s position, scale, and interaction while changing its appearance. Insertion places a new element in an existing composition. Keep those jobs separate: “remove the plastic stand and reconstruct the marble counter” is a different instruction from “replace the plastic stand with a clear acrylic riser.”

    Start with a direct action verb, name the target, describe the end state, then say what stays fixed. A usable pattern: “Replace [target] with [specific replacement]. Skip vague requests like “improve the product”; they give the edit no boundary.

    Use a packshot, approved product render, logo asset, or deliberately edited keyframe when the replacement needs a specific label, material, colorway, or industrial design. Runway describes edited-frame guidance as a way to establish the intended look before generating the video edit. For a branded bottle or designed package, the reference is a visual constraint, keeping the new element from drifting into a generic approximation.

    Watch the revised video beside the original at normal playback speed, then replay the changed range several times. Check that the replacement stays attached to the scene through motion, its edges hold against the background, and neighboring details remain intact. Watch for flicker, drifting edges, warped textures, mismatched shadows, incorrect reflections, and instability as the camera or subject moves. What prompt changes one object while keeping the shot intact?

The strongest prompt makes the transformation unmistakable and identifies the visual facts that are off-limits. Runway’s API guidance calls for a transformation verb, a concise preservation clause, and a frame-image anchor where exact branded or designed appearance matters.

For a product swap, write: “Replace the blue skincare bottle on the counter with the attached amber 30 ml bottle reference. Preserve the hand motion, bottle position, camera movement, countertop, lighting, reflections, background, and timing.” That directs a replacement rather than an open-ended restyle, while the reference image carries details text can miss.

For removal, write: “Remove the black cable crossing the lower-left corner. Reconstruct the wood tabletop naturally. Preserve the presenter, camera movement, lighting, shadows, and all other objects.” State the surface that should appear afterward. Otherwise, the fill can detach from the scene.

For a local background repair, write: “Replace only the torn poster behind the speaker with a plain warm-gray wall. Preserve the speaker, wardrobe, facial appearance, camera movement, room lighting, and foreground furniture.” “Only” helps establish the boundary, though it cannot stand in for a tight time range or visual selection.

Why does one edited frame often improve branded video changes?

An edited frame helps with a brand-critical replacement because it gives the video model a concrete visual destination before it has to carry the change through motion. Runway’s May 2026 Aleph 2.0 release describes optional edited-frame guidance and says an edited frame can define the intended look for the subsequent video edit.

This matters most for a logo, packaging layout, pattern, label hierarchy, or material finish. Text can say “matte black,” yet it cannot reliably capture every proportion, typography detail, cap shape, and highlight placement that makes a particular SKU recognizable. Supply the approved reference or prepare a keyframe with the right design, then ask the edit to preserve the surrounding shot.

The frame guides the work; it does not replace review. Video inpainting must maintain continuity over time, technically harder than producing one convincing image. What should you inspect before exporting the edited video?

Check motion continuity before export, not just the hero frame. A localized edit succeeds only when the changed object belongs in every relevant frame: it needs to keep its shape, sit on the right plane, respect occlusions, and react plausibly to movement and light.

Start at the first edited frame and watch through the last. Look for edge chatter around the product silhouette, a label warping between frames, an object sliding against its surface, or texture shifting under motion. Then inspect shadow direction and density, reflections in glass or polished surfaces, and contact points where a hand, finger, or foreground prop crosses the edit.

CapCut’s guidance on video inpainting flags flicker, shadow or reflection mismatch, warped textures, and instability during camera movement as common quality risks. When the rest of the scene is worth keeping, it recommends a narrower mask and a more precise prompt. For ecommerce video, add a brand check: compare the revised product with its reference for pack color, logo placement, closure, proportions, and readable text before the file enters a paid or product-detail-page workflow.

When is Adobe After Effects Content-Aware Fill the better option?

Adobe After Effects Content-Aware Fill is the better option when the task is strictly object removal and the editor needs direct, mask-based control of the removal area. Adobe says the tool analyzes frames over time and synthesizes pixels from other frames; its Object fill method draws from the current frame and surrounding frames.

For a difficult background, After Effects allows editors to create Photoshop reference frames, including more than one where lighting or camera angle changes. That makes it a disciplined choice for a boom arm, cable, stand, or stray object that must vanish while the rest of the shot remains intact.

Use a localized AI editor where the request is a real transformation: swapping one product for another, inserting an element, changing a backdrop, or relighting part of a clip. Those jobs require a new visual object or appearance. They are not simply reconstructing the background behind something removed.

What does “without regenerating” actually preserve?

Localized editing keeps the approved source shot as its starting point; it does not promise that every pixel outside the target stays mathematically identical.
