Make the shot list the approval document first. Break the script into visual beats, decide what every shot must reveal, lock character and location references, then generate one editable panel for each approved shot; waiting until images exist turns the list into an afterthought.

AI can pull locations, characters, actions, and dialogue beats into a useful first pass. It cannot tell you whether a close-up has earned its place, whether adjacent frames will cut together, or whether a camera move pulls focus from the product, performance, or story turn. That call is direction.

How to turn a script into an AI storyboard and shot list

  1. Segment the script into boardable sequences

    Mark every shift in location, time, objective, or action as a new sequence. Within it, find the visual beats: an entrance, reveal, reaction, product interaction, decision, or exit. Do not build a panel for each line of dialogue. Build one for every moment the audience must see. Once a sequence runs beyond eight frames, split it into smaller generations to keep the board legible and the visual direction under control.

  2. Write the shot list before generating images

    Start with a spreadsheet: one row per shot. Include shot number, scene, framing, angle, movement, subject and action, then notes for lens, lighting, audio, duration, format, and restrictions. A spreadsheet handles the first pass; a specialized AI tool chiefly speeds parsing and early suggestions. State the purpose plainly—“reveal the label,” “hold on the reaction,” “establish the store”—so each shot has work to do beyond looking polished.

  3. Separate framing, angle, and movement

    Use the terms properly. Framing says how much of the scene is visible: extreme close-up, close-up, medium, wide, or overhead. Angle places the camera relative to the subject: eye level, low angle, high angle, or top-down. Movement is travel or pivot over time: static, slow push-in, pan right, tilt down, or handheld follow. A medium shot is not an angle. “Cinematic” is not a movement instruction.

  4. Lock visual references and production rules

    Gather the assets that must stay stable across the board: a character portrait for face consistency, the location, hero prop or product, wardrobe, logo treatment, and style reference. Set aspect ratio, visual style, color restrictions, and prohibited details before generating panels. Some workflows can combine up to four references in one generation—useful where a model, garment, product, and location must all remain recognizable.

    Open every prompt with shot type and movement. Then name the subject, action, environment, lighting, and mood; add the lens and narrative reveal where they help. For example: “Medium close-up, slow push-in; founder lifts the matte-red skincare bottle from a marble counter; morning window light, 50mm lens; reveal the embossed label; restrained premium editorial style.” That final clause stops a technically correct frame from missing the story beat.

  6. Review continuity, coverage, and cut logic

    Put approved panels in shot-list order and caption them. Check wardrobe, props, character features, screen direction, time of day, and product details from frame to frame. Then test coverage: does the sequence establish place, show the key action, supply a reaction or detail, and leave an ending frame? Revise individual panels. Only after that pass should prompts become video-generation instructions.

Start an AI storyboard prompt with the camera instruction, then state the event the camera records. Use this structure: framing or shot type + camera angle + movement and speed + subject and action + lens + environment + lighting + mood or style + what the shot reveals.

A workable template: “Wide shot, eye level, slow dolly left; model in a cobalt jacket enters a concrete gallery carrying a silver tote; 35mm lens; hard afternoon side light; spare fashion-film mood; reveal the jacket silhouette before the logo.” It gives the image generator composition and gives the editor a reason to cut to the next shot.

Hold the prompt steady where continuity matters. For a specific SKU, retain its color, material, placement, and label language in every relevant row. Alter only shot-level variables—framing, camera position, action, and reveal—instead of rewriting the full description each time.

How should you build coverage from a screenplay scene?

Build coverage around what the audience needs to know, not every sentence in the screenplay. Most scenes need an establishing view, a shot carrying the primary action, a detail or insert of the important object, and a reaction or transition that gives the editor a clean cut point.

For a 20-second ecommerce launch video, the sequence might run: wide location establish; medium shot of the talent approaching; close-up of hands opening the package; macro product reveal; over-the-shoulder use moment; clean end card frame. The script may only be a few lines, while the board makes every visual obligation explicit.

Use movement sparingly. It unfolds over time, so specify direction, speed, and endpoint. “Slow push-in until the product fills the lower third” is executable. “Dynamic camera” gives neither a generator nor a human editor a usable instruction.

When should you approve the storyboard before generating video?

Approve the storyboard before video generation once character identity, product accuracy, visual style, and shot order are settled. Video makes an unclear decision expensive: every revision can involve duration, motion, continuity, and potentially sound, rather than one still.

Check six things before sending a board into AI video: visual continuity, screen direction, coverage, prompt specificity, brand restrictions, and edit rhythm. If a panel cannot say what it reveals, it is usually decorative coverage. Rewrite it or cut it.

Catch continuity failures first. Compare face, hair, wardrobe, product geometry, label treatment, props, and lighting across consecutive panels. Then inspect camera logic: a subject exiting frame right should not suddenly enter the next matching shot from frame right unless the geography deliberately changed.

For branded work, give the approver a blunt choice on each frame: approved, revise, or replace. Put one reason on every revision request—“logo needs to face camera,” “shift to high angle,” or “remove extra product”—so the next generation is a directed correction, not subjective churn.

Is AI a replacement for storyboarding and directing?

AI turns a director’s choices into visible, revisable options faster; it does not replace storyboarding or directing. It is particularly useful for testing a location, character, wardrobe, product arrangement, or alternate opening before the sequence goes into motion.

The trap is treating the first attractive output as a plan. A board earns approval by preserving intent from script through shot order, not because each frame shares an aesthetic. Inspect brand-critical hero moments closely. Weak direction yields weak panels regardless of the model.
